Encyclopedia of Arkansas History and Culture

Hello. My name is Guy Lancaster, and I’m the new assistant editor of the Encyclopedia of Arkansas History and Culture, which is a project of the Butler Center for Arkansas Studies, a division of the Central Arkansas Library System. We're working on building a comprehensive reference work for historians, teachers, students, and individuals for the purpose of promoting the study, understanding, and appreciation of Arkansas's heritage. We plan to launch the Encyclopedia online in May of next year with about 1,000 entries, expanding that to somewhere between 3,000 and 5,000 entries when the project reaches its completion date of 2010. In addition, there are plans in the works for a CD-ROM and two-volume print edition.

We are looking for writers willing to compose entries on a wide array of Arkansas-related topics. A list of available topics can be found here (the ones in bold are those currently unassigned to anyone). Also on our website you can find our author guidelines, as well as the means by which to recommend to the editorial staff an author for a specific entry or a subject matter you believe we have overlooked.

Prospective writers do not need to be experts in their respective fields, merely people with an interest in the state and a willingness to do some basic research.

I hope you will take this opportunity to help build a heritage resource that promises to preserve and disseminate the history and culture of Arkansas. If you are interested in taking a particular entry, please e-mail me, and if you have any questions, please contact me at the address below or respond to this post:
